Tanna Island, Tafea province Vanuatu

Tanna Island has a population of close to 30,000 and is around 565 square kilometers in size. It is one of the southern most islands of Vanuatu. Today, Tanna is one of the islands where culture and “Kastom” are still very strong. Many villages have turned their backs on the modern ways and preferred their traditional way of life. The major attraction on Tanna is Mt Yasur, known as the world’s most accessible active Volcano. Visitors can also learn about a fascinating cargo cult known as the Jon Frum Movement and visit a “Kastom” Village.

The villagers are really friendly and the volcano is amazing — If you travel to Tanna on Friday, you will be privy to the weekly ceremony of the Jon Frum ceremony. Jon Frum Amerika is an active cargo cult on Tanna. It is said that a certain Jon Frum, on his return to the island, will provide its believers with promised goods or cargo. Jon Frum achieved deity status in WWII when US transport planes delivered food and other essentials to troops and islanders who looked at the mysterious food parcels falling from the sky and believed the gods were smiling on them. No one is sure where the cult's name came from, but it is most likely a distortion of "John from America".

Tanna is best known as the home to one of Vanuatu’s most popular tourist attractions, the mount Yasur Volcano and a walk to the vent of Yasur certainly makes a visit to Tanna unforgettable. Mt Yasur is just 90 minutes drive from White Grass Airport followed by a short 10 minutes walk to the crater rim. Yasur is best viewed at dusk so at least one night stay with us is recommended. Some visitors find Yasur a terrifying experience but it's definitely unforgettable and shouldn't be missed. At night the fireworks are more spectacular, and you can see the rocks coming

This Island has a lot to see and a lot to do from untouched waterfalls to underwater caves, see the wild horses and experience an ancient culture that remains largely unchanged. At present Tanna is known to be a fascinating destination that will allow one to explore the Tannese culture that runs throughout the year from Toka / Nekowiar to circumcision ceremony
